How to choose the perfect big dog toy for your oversized pup!
Puppies and dogs love their toys, just like toddlers and kids love their toys, but the main thing we have to consider is the size and strength of your dog or puppy. You wouldn't give a newborn baby a toy appropriate for a four year old, would you, so the exact same thoughts and decisions have to be put into choosing the appropriate type of toy for your particular size and breed of dog. If your dog is quite large and oversized you'll want to consider letting them play with a toy that is also "jumbo" in size.
The main concern is safety. You should read the labels to see what the toy is made of. Is there anything toxic in them? There have been cases reported of dogs being diagnosed with zinc toxicity anemia from ingesting small dog toys containing metal. Also, always remove all labels and price tags. Don't give your dog human toys. There is a huge selection of big dog toys available in the market today. Just make sure that the toys you choose have no small parts that your large dog could swallow or choke on. Even large breeds of dogs have been known to swallow a smaller dog toys or balls that are too small for their huge mouths, especially if your large dog is jumping or running with a small ball in its mouth. When you first give a new toy to your dog, watch him/her playing with it for a while and be aware that it's appropriate and that your dog is not choking on it.
Always make that your large dog's toys (balls, frisbees etc) are durable and strong enough for his or her's sometimes colossal teeth. If a toy gets chewed up or broken, take it away from your dog and put it in the trash.
A strong and durable piece of rope, with a knot tied in each end, is a great and popular toy for big dogs, as they love to try to unravel it.
When you don't have time to play with your dog (e.g. when you are at work) always provide safe and appropriate toys for your dog to play with and entertain him/her until you get home and can take him for a walk. This will prevent your dog getting bored, and perhaps barking, and disturbing your neighbors.
Go through your dogs' toys every so often and discard any that might look dirty or broken. It is always a good idea, also, to wash y our dogs' toys in a mild dishwashing soap every so often, to prevent the spread of germs and bacteria.
If your large dog has a more gentle personality and isn't a rough chewer, then a soft plush toy might be all that he/she needs.
There are a million choices out there, but always remember that safety is the main concern in choosing the strength and endurance of the large dog toys you purchase. There are even large bone toys that will help keep his/her teeth clean.
