Dog Tape Worm

What are dog tapeworms?
Tapeworms in dogs and cats usually come from the family of Dipylidium caninum and are the most common form of tapeworms found in animals and pets. Typically they live in the digestive tract of their host by attaching themselves to the wall of the intestines with a hook like mouth that suctions and removes nutrients from food.

How did my dog get tapeworms?
Your dog could have gotten these worms from accidentally ingesting or eating fleas or lice. This can be easier than you think. A dead flea or some lice could easily fall into their food bowl while eating or perhaps when they itch themselves they often use their mouths to chew or bite their skin. Many times they'll even lick their own skin or fur in an attempt to clean themselves. It is also possible that they could have eaten something they've killed or perhaps eating a rodent, dead bird, mouse or rabbit. Tapeworms in dogs or cats are different from hookworms or roundworms.

How long can a tapeworm live?
A tape worm which is nothing more than an internal parasite that can affect a wide range of mammals including humans can typically live for weeks or months if they are not killed and expelled from the body.

What are some symptoms?
The symptoms of tapeworms in your dog or cat can be many. It can vary from sudden weight loss, mild diarrhea, anemia and lack of appetite, skin problems and laziness or the lack of desire to play or have that spark that they used to have. This occurs because these parasitical worms are placing undue stress on their immune systems and robbing their body of the nutrients in their food. Sometimes your dog or cat may throw up if the tapeworm has irritated their stomach in some way, and this is possible.

Are they contagious?
No they are not contagious but it is possible for a human to get some form of tapeworms. This is not a cause for concern, but you will want to take care of your pet's health and flea control. Although the risk is low for a human to get tapeworms, children are the most likely to get them. The way a child would get them is by accidentally ingesting a flea that is itself infected with these worms. You'll know if your child has them if you see little white spots that look like rice after a bowel movement. We recommend getting rid of fleas if you can to help alleviate the potential for a child to get tapeworms.
