Dog Eye Health
It seems like on a daily basis that amount of calls coming into a vet clinic about eye problems for their pets is increasing. Sometimes people will call in
complaining of itching or scratching of their dogs eye or perhaps just soreness
around the eyeball itself. Keeping your dog’s eye healthy and their vision clear is a huge concern for many dog owners. And it should be! There are many serious issues that can arise if you have let an eye get infected. You do not want to let these types of eye injuries go untreated for long periods of time.
It's difficult for many veterinarians to know exactly what is going on by a brief description over the phone. Many times what seems like a minor eye health issue doesn't show the extreme danger of the problem. Your dog may be squinting or scratching their eyes often and you might not think it is a big deal but it could be a scratched or inflamed cornea or even worse blastomycosis which is a cancer behind the eyeball itself. Glaucoma can be another dog eye health issue that can start out relatively innocuous. Glaucoma can lead to blindness or even removal of the eye itself. So many times something innocent or seemingly harmless like a red appearance in the eye, dilated pupils or a clouded cornea can be much more dangerous than you might think. So it's imperative to make sure we provide our pets with great dog eye care as well as great dog dental care. We don't want to forget about their teeth!.
A good guideline to follow is to get your dog to a vet within 12 hours of any eye injury. These types of dog eye injuries can be caused many factors like a fight with another dog or cat, a thorn can hit their eye during a walk in some brush etc. Getting your dog into a professional and a veterinarian can be a life saver. They'll look at possible dog eye treatments like certain dog products or even over the counter medications and even possible surgery should he find cancer of the cornea or retina or cataracts. Your dog can't tell you what's going on and getting them into a qualified vet as soon as possible will his chances at not only living longer but saving his or her life as well should something more serious be going on.
