Why your pet should be wearing dog sun glasses!

Having a nice pair of protective eyewear is a great addition to any dog’s wardrobe. Or should I say it’s really the perfect pet accessory. Many people think that trying to protect their dog’s eyes from the sun is being a bit over protective. They say that animal’s eyes are strong enough to not be affected by the suns rays. But in my experience I’ve seen many dogs develop poor eyesight as the years go by and the vet would always say that it’s because of too much exposure to the intensity and brightness of the suns ultra violet rays. Generally the light colored the eye; the more affected or sensitive a dog can be to intense and bright light. This typically goes for humans as well. I know personally that my blue eyes are affected greatly when it’s a bright sunny day, whereas my friends who have dark brown eyes can go all day and not be that affected by the brightness of the sun.

Just because a dog is an animal they’re still somewhat domesticated, no matter how we look at it. Their wild streak has slower over time been breed out of them so as the generations go by, their “wild nature” decreases. It works the same way with humans as well, we no longer are hunters or gatherers killing wild game for our meals right?

So because a dog is exposed to much more direct sun than we normally are, (assuming they’re outside in the backyard most of the time) we want to keep their eyes, retinas, corneas etc in a good healthy state. The last thing we want is to have them develop cataracts or blindness because we were too lazy to keep proper eye care.

What I like to do is to give my dog a good pair of doggles sun glasses if I know they’ll be in direct sun for an extended amount of time. This will help them to keep their eyes healthy and strong over the years and also minimize damage brought on by UV rays of the sun. Dog’s can go blind because of sunlight, trust me, I’ve had a friend’s dog go blind because of over exposure to the sun and the dog lived a miserable last few years. You don’t want to see this happen.

A good way is to get your dog a good pair of dog sunglasses even when they’re a puppy to get them used to the idea and trained to wear them. Dog sunglasses are perfect for bright days at the beach or camping or even if you’re out on the boat. The reflection of the sun off of the water is blinding. If you’re going snow skiing this is the perfect time and place to bring a pair of dog sunglasses. Take care of your dog’s eyes just like you would your own. Like I’ve said before, the last thing you want to do is to be taking care of a blind dog because they were exposed to too much sun and you were too unaware to get them some dog sunglasses.
