It seems like cancer is at epidemic levels in humans these days, but canine cancer is also very prevalent. Like in humans, various treatments are used in treating canine cancer, depending, of course, on the type of cancer, but one thing all canine cancers have in common is the need for a specialized and healthy eating plan.

You have all heard of the expression ‘you are what you eat’. Well, dogs are what they eat too, and if you start from the very beginning feeding your dog a healthy diet, it will get used to eating healthy food and not know anything else.

It is actually easier feeding your pet a healthy diet than you kids, as once kids get into school they start seeing all the junk food their friends are eating and want it too. That doesn’t happen with our pets, so start them off eating healthy and they should live a long and cancer-free life.

Your dog’s diet is controlled by you, the owner, and nobody else, so now the ‘pressure is on’!! The most important thing is to stay away from grains. Dogs were not born to be grain eaters. Dog food manufacturers made them that way. Dogs don’t produce the necessary enzymes for the digestion of grains. Read your labels! The first ingredient on the label should be some type of meat. There will always probably be some type of grains listed, but they should be further down on the list of ingredients and not at the top. Also, make sure your dogs’ treats are grain-free as well.

As in humans, fatty acids (omega 3, 6 and 9) are recommended for canines too. Fish Oil is a good type of these fatty acids. All you have to do is open a Fish Oil capsule and your dog will love the fishy smell. One 1000 mg. softgel daily per 20 lbs body weight is ideal.

If preferred, you can make your own pet food. Start off by partially cooking ground beef, pork, chicken or turkey and see how your pet does with that. You can gradually cook it less and less, as raw is better. A healthy eating plan for your pet to prevent cancer would be 75% meat and 25% vegetables and fruit.

Use your food processor to mix ground meats (beef, chicken, turkey or pork) an apple, a clove or two of garlic, a couple of carrots, two raw eggs, and a little raw goat milk or plain yogurt to give it the consistency to mold into patties. Make enough patties to freeze for at least a week. Raw veggies can also be added before mixing, especially cancer fighting dark green vegetables, such as kale and brocolli.

Always remember that your pet’s health is just as important as your own, and, unlike us, our pets can’t be in control of what they put into their stomachs, but we can. And, it is all a choice.

The health and vitality of precious animals is and should be one of our greatest concerns. Many people today couldn’t care less about how healthy their pet is and some even beat or abandon their defenseless dogs or cats. It can be very sad. The two most important factors in your animal’s health and fitness is no different than ours. The two most important factors to pet health are obviously exercise and diet. Although as humans we have to focus on other factors as well like stress and lifestyle issues. For a dog (and for you!) one of the greatest disciplines you can engage in, is taking your dog for at least 1 long walk per day. If not for their sake, use it as an excuse for you to get some good cardiovascular exercise in. There is nothing like starting the day, getting the blood pumping, increasing your heart rate and breathing some clean fresh air. Your dog will thank you for it and years down the line, you’ll be glad you went for your daily walks. Taking a daily walk like this in the morning not only helps you burn more calories during the day (vs not going for your walk) but it helps reduce stress and allows you to plan your day and focus on the majors vs the minors. On top of all the other benefits of daily dog walks, it’s fun! Don’t forget that.

Now the other key component to your pet’s health and longevity is your dogs’ diet. A dog’s digestive system was not designed to eat the dry cooked kibble that we feed them. If you think about how their diets would be in the wild, they would primarily be eating a raw meat based diet. They would also be eating grubs, insects and maybe some vegetables and grass from time to time. Their digestive tracts are relatively short which means that they are able to process raw meats like lions and so forth. The meats that they would be eating would have lots of fatty acids in them as well as live enzymes that cooked and processed foods do not. This means that their bodies must create these enzymes to help turn that dry kibble into a liquid so it can be processes and assimilated in the intestines. This is a lot of work for a body to do! Because their bodily resources are always taken up or consumed with trying to digest, process and assimilate the chemical laden processed food we are giving them, their bodies cannot replicate new healthy tissues and cells. Now as the dog ages even more rapidly, each generation of replicated cells and tissues become lesser versions of the former ones. Then at some point disease takes over and your dog or cat becomes ill and or diagnosed with some type of cancer that eventually takes them. A lot of times their coat is an indicator of their health. If their skin looks bad or your dog is shedding profusely this can tell a lot.

Dr. Francis Pottenger studied hundreds of cats for over 3 generations and found that the cats that were fed a diet high in enzymes and more raw food thrived, whereas the cats that were fed a typical processed diet had similar diseases that we humans face. Because animals have the ability to hunt for their food and eat it in the state that they found it, raw and uncooked, their stomachs produce high amounts of hydrochloric acids to liquefy and make alkaline the raw meats they should be eating.

So take some time each morning for you and your beloved dog and go for a walk. Both of you will benefit. Also start feeding your dog some raw meats and take a look at some of the pet vitamins we have available. Another option for feeding your dog some vegetables is to grind up some raw nuts like almonds for example with some avocados, carrot chunks, broccoli and throw some spices into it with some raw meat and some of our dog vitamins and your dog will love it!
