Housebreaking a Dog
Tips for housebreaking your dog quickly and easily
Training your new dog for your house can sometimes be a nightmare or sometimes it can go very smoothly. This article on how to housebreak a dog will give you some tips and insights about how to make this process go as seamless as possible. Let's face it, having an unruly untrained dog around your house is no fun. Just watch the movie Marley and Me. On the other hand the rewards for both you and your pet are great if you go thru the process of housetraining your dog.
One of the first things to consider is that dogs by their nature want to please their owners. Sometimes it won't seem like they want to but all dogs want to make their owners happy, it's just their nature. The second thing to consider is making sure you start housebreaking your dog as early and often as possible. This will set a precedence with your dog that not only are you their owner and master but they will begin to associate certain areas of the house or backyard with certain activities.
Dogs like routine. So here are some tips on creating a routine for your dog so they know what areas of the house to associate with certain actions or activities.
1. Always leave your house using the same door so your dog knows which door to wait by if he or she needs to go outside and go to the bathroom.
2. Feed your dog at the same time and same place every day. This will allow your dogs cycles to get regular.
3. Take your dog for a quick walk first thing in the morning.
4. Let your dog outside to go to the bathroom last thing before bed.
5. Set a timer for 30 minutes after your dog is done eating and either take him outside for a quick walk or let him in your backyard. When your timer goes off your dog will know it's time to relieve themselves.
6. Feed your dog in the same place each day.
7. If you take your dog for a walk each day, make sure it's at the same time. Dogs love cycles and routines.
When housetraining your dog remember that positive reinforcement always works better than negativity and anger. Although sometimes you may need to use some anger when housebreaking your dog always use 80% positive reinforcement and 20% anger if need be. Dogs just need time to learn what you want and what you expect. Remember dogs want to please us.
Always make sure to clean up and get rid of any odor in areas of your house where you dog has urinated. They will start to develop a pattern if they know they have urinated in that spot before.
Many people use crate training and that works very well. Most of the time dogs will not go to the bathroom in the area where they sleep so this can allow them to easily be put onto a schedule and routine where they know when it's time to go to the bathroom.
There are also dog housebreaking products on the market today like doggy diapers as well as, puppy pads, puppy pants and even hands free cleanup tools so you don't have to ever touch anything when cleaning up after them.
